Compromising Fire Safety Unacceptable

Fire Sprinkler

State Member for Ku-ring-gai, Alister Henskens SC MP, has today expressed his considerable disquiet over reports that significant fire safety concerns had been raised by Fire & Rescue NSW in respect of an apartment building on Pacific Highway, Killara.

After identifying 12 separate items of concern after an inspection on 14 March 2017, Fire & Rescue NSW and Ku-ring-gai Council conducted a joint inspection of the building at 497-507 Pacific Highway on 2 May 2017. That inspection revealed 17 instances of alleged non-compliance with relevant legislation and Australian fire safety Standards, as well as possible breaches of the Building Code of Australia.

“The safety of our community must never be compromised,” said Mr Henskens. “These disclosures are very disturbing and I will be raising this issue in Parliament as soon as it resumes next month.”

The findings of Fire & Rescue NSW’s inspection will be reported to Council at its meeting on 18 July 2017.
