Have a Plan as Third Consecutive La Nina Declared

Member for Ku-ring-gai Alister Henskens SC is urging residents of the Ku-ring-gai Electorate to prepare for the risk of flooding, following the declaration by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) of a third consecutive La Nina event which will see more rainfall over already saturated areas and catchments.

“We have seen the flooding that increased rainfall brings over recent years, so it is important we act now on this La Nina declaration to prepare for a greater risk over the weeks and months ahead,” Mr Henskens said.

“Please make sure you have up-to-date emergency evacuation plans and kits. Taking these precautions could make a major difference if it comes time to leave your home due to flooding.”

“Simple home maintenance like cleaning gutters also goes a long way in preparing for future storms and the impacts they can have on your house.”

Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience and Minister for Flood Recovery Steph Cooke said the community should be extra vigilant following the La Nina declaration.

“The weather has been relentless over recent times and with the latest La Nina declaration the threat isn’t likely to ease any time soon,” Ms Cooke said.

“There is already an increased risk of storms between October and March, which is the typical storm season. So please take steps now to prepare yourselves and your families.”
