Honouring Our Veterans On Remembrance Day

Red Poppy

Member for Ku-ring-gai, Alister Henskens SC, is encouraging the community to pay their respects to Australia’s servicemen and women and observe a minute’s silence this Friday, 11 November.

“On Friday we mark the 98th anniversary of the end of the First World War, four years of conflict that devastated so many Australian families,” Mr Henskens said.

“Around 60,000 Australians were killed during that war, many of those on iconic battlefields in Turkey and on the Western Front in France and Belgium.

“At 11am on Friday 11 November, we remember those men and women, and also acknowledge the service of the tens of thousands of Australians who’ve served in conflicts since.

“I encourage everyone to join me at the commemoration service being conducted by the Roseville RSL Sub-Branch at the Roseville Memorial Club at 64 Pacific Highway, Roseville, commencing at 10:45am, to pay tribute to those who have died or suffered in their service to our country.”

Mr Henskens also encouraged the community to consider being part in the Buy a Star campaign, offering the people of NSW a chance to be part of the Centenary Project, a major redevelopment of the Hyde Park monument.

“The Anzac Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park was completed in 1934, in part thanks to the sale of the golden stars that now adorn the dome of the ceiling in the Hall of Memory,” Mr Henskens said.

“Now, stars can also be purchased in a digital render of the dome and personal tributes added in an online Constellation of Honour and Memory on the Memorial’s website.

“Funds raised from the campaign will go towards new interpretive and education programs, ensuring the Anzac legacy is passed on to future generations.”
