Learning how to plan a travel route in and around Ku-ring-gai, topping up the Gold Opal card or checking in ‘real’ time when the bus or train is coming are hot topics featured in the NSW Government’s new Tech Savvy Seniors Transport App workshop.

State Member for Ku-ring-gai, Alister Henskens SC MP, announced that the new addition to the Tech Savvy Seniors Program at the Ku-ring-gai Library at Gordon will be available for Ku-ring-gai seniors who express their interest.

“We want Ku-ring-gai seniors to have the confidence to navigate their way anywhere and have the smoothest trip possible to their destination, whether they are going to the supermarket or travelling afar in NSW,” Mr Henskens said.

Participants will learn how to use three of the most commonly used mobile phone apps for navigating public transport in NSW, including Transport for NSW’s Trip Planner, Opal Travel, and Moovit.

“These apps make it easier for us to get around and we don’t want older people to be left behind. I encourage all Ku-ring-gai seniors to be proactive and sign up for a training session at Ku-ring-gai Gordon Library today.”

Minister for Ageing, Tanya Davies, said the Transport App workshop is being launched across the State, and will join other free and low cost courses available through the Tech Savvy Seniors program delivered at libraries and community colleges statewide.

“Technology is moving at a fast pace and older people are willing to get in on the action – more than 65,000 training places have been offered through the Tech Savvy Seniors program so far,” Mrs Davies said.

“The new workshop is a great example of the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to support people to stay actively engaged in their communities as they get older.”

Minister for Transport Andrew Constance said that websites and apps have changed the way we travel.

“Technology is making it easier and faster to travel around our beautiful state at an affordable price. The NSW Government is committed to making public transport accessible for all, and the new Tech Savvy Seniors workshop will help extend this to our older generation.”
