Motorists will be able to enjoy a smoother journey along the Pacific Highway, with clearways being introduced from Monday 23 July on a busy section of road that provides a gateway to Sydney’s northern suburbs and the M1 Pacific Motorway.

State Member for Ku-ring-gai, Alister Henskens SC MP, said the new clearways will manage traffic flow and improve journey reliability for motorists who travel along the key corridor between Wahroonga and Pymble.

“These clearways are part of the $121 million Clearways Program, which aims to manage congestion and delays on Sydney’s roads.  They are the first measure in a range of initiatives to improve traffic along the Pacific Highway in Ku-ring-gai,” Mr Henskens said.

“We all know that traffic congestion needs improving outside of the peak including on Saturdays.  Introducing clearways on this section of the Pacific Highway will help family trips to Saturday sport, weekend shoppers, and those who are looking for a faster journey to other parts of the City or beyond.

“Roads and Maritime Services advised the community of the new and extended clearways last month and asked for feedback on business parking at Pymble.

“All feedback has been considered and the proposed clearways are progressing with changes to proposed parking at Pymble.”

Mr Henskens said clearways on the Pacific Highway between Pennant Hills Road at Wahroonga and Mona Vale Road at Pymble will help traffic flow by restricting parking on weekdays and weekends.

“Motorists are advised the new and extended clearways will be in operation from Monday 23 July,” Mr Henskens said.

“The clearways will operate in both directions from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and from 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays.

“This important corridor provides access to Pennant Hills Road, Kissing Point Road, Mona Vale Road and the M1 Motorway as well as access to four train stations including Turramurra and Pymble stations so these clearways will benefit thousands of commuters.”

Mr Henskens said as part of the implementation of clearways along this stretch of the Pacific Highway and in response to safety concerns, changes will be made to the southbound merge location and parking at Pymble and a new left turn lane will be created.

“To improve safety for motorists travelling southbound on Pacific Highway, the merge from three lanes to two lanes before the Pymble bridge has been moved forward,” Mr Henskens said.

“Line marking between Telegraph Road and Post Office Street/Grandview Street will be changed to merge southbound traffic into two lanes around 100 metres after the Telegraph Road intersection. This location is on a straighter and flatter section of Pacific Highway and aims to improve visibility for merging and provides a dedicated left turn lane into Pymble shops.

“This change will retain three southbound lanes through the Telegraph Road intersection to ensure efficiency for motorists.

“This change will allow us to retain around eight parking spaces near Post Office Street and introduce a loading zone near local businesses along the Pacific Highway, outside the morning clearways of 6am – 10am.”

Mr Henskens said a single parked car can significantly reduce road capacity and cause delays on busy road corridors so it is important to ensure all lanes are available to improve journey reliability for road users.

“During clearway hours, residents will need to reconsider parking arrangements for visitors including parking in driveways, garages and on local streets,” Mr Henskens said.

Work to install new clearway signage will be carried out between Tuesday 10 and Sunday 22 July, weather permitting.
