Marian Street Theatre for Young People

Nathan Gilkes from Marian Street Theatre, Alister Henskens SC MP and young performers

Mr ALISTER HENSKENS (Wahroonga) (18:07): The Marian Street Theatre for Young People has been a community treasure for over 50 years, enriching the lives of young people in our area and across Sydney through the transformative power of live performance. Alongside Matt Cross, the newly elected member for Davidson, I had the pleasure of visiting the theatre earlier this year to see years 4 to 6 student performances and youth ensemble class performances. What struck me on my visit was how the students came from across Sydney to learn at this remarkable theatre company, which we are fortunate to have in our community. I was pleased that last year the theatre was able to secure a grant from the Government of over $50,000 to ensure the continuation of its activities in 2023. I thank chair Cathy Morcom, vice-chair David Newman, executive director Lee Johnston and former artistic director Nathan Gilkes. I wish Nathan the best; he does amazing work. It is a shame the Creative Kids vouchers are being axed. It has had so much support from this young theatre group.
