Wahroonga Electorate Community Building Partnership Grants
Mr ALISTER HENSKENS (Wahroonga) (16:51): I acknowledge the outstanding contributions of community organisations in my electorate of Wahroonga, with some receiving funding under the Community Building Partnership program. I wholeheartedly support initiatives that strengthen our communities and deliver real benefits to local people. This year's grants have funded a diverse range of projects that improve safety, enhance education, promote health and wellbeing, and foster inclusion in the Wahroonga electorate. They are tangible improvements that will make a difference in the daily lives of thousands of residents in my community, and I am pleased to be able to support them in that way.
At PCYC Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai, a grant of $18,000 will provide new gym equipment, including a pendulum squat machine and SkiErg. The upgrade benefits gym members, local sporting teams, school sport programs and police initiatives, and helps young people build strength and confidence while engaging in activities that promote wellbeing, whether at the Mark Taylor Oval in Waitara or elsewhere. Education is a cornerstone of our community, and several schools have received vital support in this round of grants. The Wahroonga Public School's P&C Association received $100,000 to resurface sports courts and cricket nets. That will create multi‑sport spaces for students and the wider community after the public school had not received a Community Building Partnership grant for some years. The Normanhurst Public School's P&C Association received $25,000 to continue its sensory garden project, which will transform unused space into an inclusive outdoor learning environment.
The Pymble Public School's P&C Association received $30,000 to upgrade play equipment for students in years 3 to 6, which will create a safe and engaging space for over 300 students every day. The Pennant Hills High School's P&C Association received $38,657 for shaded seating areas, which will give students comfortable spaces to learn and socialise outdoors. That is incredibly important to the school's outdoor learning areas. The Normanhurst Boys High School's P&C Association received $10,000 to upgrade its canteen furniture, which will improve wellbeing and interaction for students and volunteers.
Sporting organisations are also benefiting from this round of grants. The Kissing Point Sports Club received $7,014 to upgrade coaching equipment and introduce a uniform hire program to encourage participation in netball. It also received $15,000 for audiovisual equipment to enhance the clubhouse experience for members and volunteers. The Kissing Point Sports Club is one of the largest sporting clubs in my electorate. Meanwhile, Thornleigh Sports Club—another big multi-sports club in the electorate—received $12,540 to restore the cricket pitch and surrounding areas at Thornleigh Oval, which will ensure safe and playable grounds for local competitions. That has been an issue for some years because of bad weather.
Community safety and wellbeing remain priorities for the allocation of funding. The 2nd Turramurra Scout Group received $27,817 to replace deteriorated hall eaves and fascia boards, remove hazardous asbestos and install a defibrillator. They are critical improvements that will protect health and extend the life of that important facility, which is completely maintained by volunteers and grants of this kind. Streetwork Australia Limited received $12,735 to upgrade iPads for youth caseworkers to enable better delivery of programs that support vulnerable young people. Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney received $33,916 to replace its van, which will ensure the continued collection and delivery of pre-loved goods that fund life-saving mental health services.
Faith and cultural organisations have not been forgotten. The Danish Church in Australia received $10,000 to create a covered outdoor area, which will offer a safe and welcoming space for children and community members to gather. Similarly, Thornleigh Community Baptist Church received $61,456 to refurbish its auditorium and adjoining office, which will improve facilities that serve a wide range of community groups. Some of our youngest learners will benefit from this round of grants too. Uniting Preschool Turramurra - TurraTots received $20,000 to resurface its verandah play area, which will enhance safety and comfort for children during active play and learning.
Finally, we are supporting emerging sports. The Sydney Northern Rays Water Polo Club received $27,865 to acquire a timing board and scoreboard. That will help the growing club provide better experiences for players and spectators. Those projects demonstrate the importance of governments investing in local communities. Unfortunately, the Minns Labor Government has not made any significant investments in my local community.
